South Dakota, long known for its impressive business climate, just became more attractive to technology and research-based businesses.

The University of South Dakota (USD) Research Park is finalizing its master plan for a new, 80-acre innovation district in northwest Sioux Falls, S.D.

The new district is currently home to the University Center, where the six state universities deliver courses and the USD Graduate Education and Applied Research (GEAR) Center. The Gear Center includes a Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) facility to assist biotech businesses producing products for pre-clinical and clinical trials.

The master plan will include several initial infrastructure and potential catalyst projects. The goals of the park are:

  • Develop the research and development infrastructure needed by university and industry researchers.
  • Connect university activities with the private sector partners to support workforce development and R&D.
  • Develop the infrastructure and amenities knowledge based businesses need to grow and prosper.
  • Foster entrepreneurship and commercialization through a robust incubation program.

"This really puts South Dakota on a more competitive playing field in terms of research and commercialization. The trend is definitely toward developing small communities centered around research and innovation, but that also have a variety of other services available," said Rich Naser, president of the USD Research Park.

“South Dakota has always been recognized for its strong collaboration among researchers and the development of this research district plays perfectly to that strength,” Naser concluded.

This March, air travelers can read about South Dakota’s business climate and quality of life when they are aboard a Delta flight.

The Governor’s Office of Economic Development is partnering with Sky Magazine, Delta’s in-flight publication.

A team of local and national writers will feature business and travel opportunities in South Dakota in the 20-plus page section.

The magazine will be on board Delta’s 14,000 daily global flights, Delta private jets and chartered flights. South Dakota will also be part of Sky’s monthly eNewsletter, its digital magazine, and the FlyDelta iPad app. Sky magazine has more than 5.4 million monthly readers, making it more highly read than Fortune, Wall Street Journal and USA Today.

May the Workforce Be With You

With workforce being one of the hottest topics in economic development today, it is no surprise that workforce is the theme of the 2015 Governor’s Economic Development Conference, scheduled for April 15 in Sioux Falls.

“Workforce is an issue that we see coming up again and again,” said GOED Commissioner Pat Costello. “This year’s conference has several sessions built around workforce-related topics that should prove to be useful and relevant to our partners.”

There are also several changes to this year’s conference format and schedule.

“We are holding the conference at the Sanford Health Research Center,” said Costello. “There will be a pre-conference reception the night before, then sessions will run from 9-5 on April 15th and be followed by the Governor’s Award Banquet.”

The Governor’s Economic Development Conference is again being held in conjunction with the Governor’s Giant Vision Business Competition.
