Two GOED directors recently graduated with a post-Baccalaureate certificate in Leadership Management.

Kim Easland, Finance Director, and Steve Watson, Business and Community Development Director, earned their certificates through the Governor's Leadership Management program in late October.

"We are delighted by this accomplishment," said GOED Commissioner Pat Costello. "The strong leadership and managerial skills that Kim and Steve have learned and continue to develop, will no doubt strengthen South Dakota's economic development efforts when they bring those skills back to the office."

The 15-credit program focuses on a series of graduate level courses delivered by faculty from the University of South Dakota through a combination of distance learning technologies and intensive face-to-face seminar/courses.

The certificate has been available since 2005 to selected state government managers. To date, 112 individuals have completed the course.

Congratulations, Kim & Steve!

The GOED, along with three partnering communities, made its mark at the Medical Design & Manufacturing (MD&M) Expo in Minneapolis last week.

North Sioux City, Sioux Falls, and Vermillion economic development representatives worked with the GOED to grow the medical device manufacturing industry in South Dakota and in respective communities.

"This year's show was exceptionally productive for us," said Alissa VanMeeteren, Business Development Representative. "We received a good number of leads from Minnesota, where our business climate is an easy sell. It is a lot more cost effective to do business in South Dakota."

VanMeeteren also said that the show is an important tool in growing the medical device manufacturing industry in South Dakota.

"South Dakota's medical device manufacturing industry is growing, and will continue to grow in the coming years. Attending this show is a huge asset in helping us in our efforts in the industry."

This was the seventh consecutive year the GOED has attended the show that brings together top suppliers and resources to solve the toughest medical device design, engineering, prototyping, manufacturing, assembly and packaging challenges in the industry.

Follow-up work is underway, and a final report is being compiled.

The Governor's Office of Economic Development is hiring a Business Development Representative. GOED Business Development Representatives focus on facilitating investment and quality job creation in the state.
