GOED Business Development Team Blitzes Minnesota

The business development team at the South Dakota Governor's Office of Economic Development recently hopped the border to Minnesota and met with 30 companies, taking advantage of the opportunity to tout South Dakota's many business benefits in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

“For a lot of companies in Minnesota, giving South Dakota a look makes a lot of sense,” said Pat Costello, GOED Commissioner. “In many categories, we come out on top – we have fewer taxes, lower tax rates, and low union membership rates.”

“The trip also makes a lot of sense for our business development team,” Costello continued.  “We have the opportunity to meet with many of the prospective companies, site selectors and business leaders in the area, and really get in a lot of worthwhile, quality meetings in one trip.”

The infographic below highlights some of the advantages for business that Minnesota companies would find in South Dakota.

“It is obvious that South Dakota is a terrific location for business,” said Costello. “I’m confident that with continued efforts such as the Minnesota Blitz, we will be able to convince more companies to take a look at doing business in South Dakota.”

Plans for Manufacturing Week Underway

The GOED is making plans for 2015 South Dakota Manufacturing Week, which will be Sept. 28 - Oct. 2. This year marks the third year the state is celebrating the event.

"We are really excited about this year's events," said Pat Costello, GOED Commissioner. "Manufacturing Week is consistently growing, and we are always looking for more ways to get our community partners, manufacturers, service organizations and the media involved."

Below are a few activities to think about when making your own Manufacturing Week plans.
  • Host public/student tours through your company’s facility.
  • Host a career fair specifically targeting careers in the manufacturing industry.
  • Visit local civic organizations and classrooms.
  • Invite middle and high school counselors for a guided tour.
  • Partner with other companies to award scholarships.
  • Build a float for the homecoming parade.
  • Host a community picnic.
  • Submit a Letter to the Editor.
  • Celebrate and recognize employee longevity throughout the week.
  • Build a social media campaign.
  • Visit local TV and radio shows.
  • Throw a party.
