Joe Fiala Named GOED's New Research and Community Development Director

Joe Fiala has been named the new director of Research and Community Development for the Governor’s Office of Economic Development. Joe has been with the GOED for nearly five years, most recently serving as a business development representative. Prior to that, he served as the executive director of On Hand Development Corporation in Miller.

Joe will be responsible for outreach and coordination among South Dakota communities and GOED partner organizations. He will oversee GOED's community development staff, as well as the research staff. Among his first tasks will be to develop and implement a statewide community development strategy in consultation with a variety of stakeholders. Joe will transition into his new role July 25.

“Joe brings with him not only experience as a business development rep with knowledge of GOED, but also experience as director of a local economic development corporation in Miller – a rural community facing similar opportunities and challenges as many of our small towns,” said Aaron Scheibe, Interim Commissioner, Governor’s Office of Economic Development. “We are very excited to have him in this new role.”

Cerney Retires After 29 Years

GOED’s long-standing Research Director, Mary Cerney, is retiring from state government July 8.

Mary started at the GOED in 1986 as a writer and researcher. In 2005, she began her role as research director, where she has led a four person team responsible for conducting analytical research, overseeing databases, and coordinating industry studies that the office uses for various requests for information, proposals and website content.
