A Message from Aaron Scheibe

Deputy Commissioner Aaron Scheibe

Growing up in Pierre, I never thought I would spend the last 12 years working all around the world as a diplomat for the U.S. Department of State. Yet I first learned so many of the qualities that helped me succeed in that world - hard work, self-reliance, service, and working well with others - from my early days in South Dakota.

Over the years, I watched with pride as those same qualities helped our state gain acclaim as a great place for living and for business, and so when my wife Laura and I decided it was time to settle down with our two young sons, our thoughts turned from an international life to returning to our Midwestern roots - and to South Dakota in particular.

Having focused my career on economic and legal issues, such as helping U.S. companies do business overseas and negotiating trade agreements, I am excited about working with all businesses - whether local, national, or international - to continue South Dakota's remarkable record of success. I believe our state has a great story to tell, and I am honored to join Commissioner Costello and the GOED team in their work on behalf of all South Dakotans!

Governor Dennis Daugaard, second from left, Commissioner Pat Costello, second from right, and South Dakota Department of Agriculture Secretary Lucas Lentsch, right, visit with a tour guide at a dairy production facility in Mongolia.

Governor Dennis Daugaard and his team of economic development and agriculture officials, along with business leaders from across the state, have returned from the Governor's third trade mission to China.

"I think it is safe to call the trip a success," said Commissioner Pat Costello. "We made some new contacts, grew some of our existing connections, and raised awareness on South Dakota-made products."

"I'm excited to see what deals and networking opportunities come out of our trade mission for the entities that accompanied us," Costello continued.

The delegation has also taken some of the initial steps to form a sister state relationship with Inner Mongolia.

Plans are initially underway for a 2015 trade mission. Interested entities should contact Ryan Budmayr, Business Development Representative at 605-367-4302 or
