South Dakota Manufacturing Week Sees Growth

The fourth annual South Dakota Manufacturing Week wrapped up last week, and by most measures, the event was a complete success.

"Each year, South Dakota Manufacturing Week continues to grow. More communities and more companies are getting involved each year, and we are thrilled to see the increased interaction and awareness as to the role the manufacturing plays in the state economy," said GOED commissioner Scott Stern.

Communities and companies across the state hosted job fairs, speakers, facility tours, employee socials, Manufacturing Olympics, among other activities.

"South Dakota has more than 1,100 manufacturing companies, which in total put more than $1.9 billion into the state's economy and account for 10 percent of jobs," said Stern. "It is a really crucial component, and one that we are glad to bring attention to with Manufacturing Week."

Participants in South Dakota Manufacturing Week used the hashtag #SDMfgWeek to tag stories, photos, and comments of the week's activities. And, the GOED featured these great feature stories on South Dakota manufacturers:

The GOED recently welcomed three new faces to the economic development team. Kristen Honey is the office's newest business development representative; and Ashley McCloud and Brent Duerre respectively joined the GOED's marketing and public relations division as a graphic designer and digital marketing coordinator.

"These new hires are all excellent additions to our staff," said GOED Commissioner Scott Stern. "I'm excited to have Kristen, Ashley, and Brent's unique sets of skills utilized at the GOED."

Honey was previously employed at the South Dakota Department of Revenue as a revenue agent and has a background in sales, finance and management. She has bachelor's degrees in marketing and management as well as an master's in business administration.

McCloud is the GOED's first full-time graphic designer. She has spent the past nine years as part of the GOED and Department of Tourism's shared creative staff, working on GOED projects such as the Governor's Invitational Pheasant Hunt and Buffalo Roundup, as well as annual reports and conference materials. McCloud studied graphic design at Dakota State University.

Duerre (photo not available), who begins this week, will be the office's Web and Digital Marketing Coordinator. He has spent the last 7 years working for Hub City Radio in Aberdeen and studied marketing at Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown.

Property Tax Exemption Deadline Approaching

Nov. 1 is the deadline for non-profit industrial development corporations to file with county directors of equalization for a property tax exemption for real property for property tax year 2016, paid in 2017.
The South Dakota Legislature increased the exemption from $100,000 to $750,000 in 2016. Click here to read the statute.
The forms to file for this exemption are available at The South Dakota Department of Revenue’s property tax forms page.
If your organization has previously filed for this exemption, you need to complete form PT-44 Application for Continuing Tax Exempt Status of a Private Organization. If you have not previously filed for this exemption, complete form PT-43 Application for Property Tax Exempt Status.
The GOED recommends taking the completed form to the Director of Equalization to get a time-stamped copy to verify timely filing.
